Spring 1 - 2025

This half term our topic is:

In the event that our school has to close we have added a series of links below which your child can follow. Once your child has completed any work please can you upload to Tapestry for you child’s teacher to view.

Phonics

1. Reading sounds

Here is a video showing the first 25 set 1 sounds. Please watch the video with your child. Our aim is for your child to be speedily reading all 25 sounds. Turn off the volume as the video plays to see if your child pauses or struggles to recognise any of the sounds. If they do, please go over that sound with your child. Play some exciting games with your child, such as hiding the sound around the house to see if your child can find it, or playing 'splat the sound' where you call out a sound and your child has to splat it with their hand. In addition, remember to use your virtual classroom videos that are sent home to you via Tapestry or MarvellousME.

2. Writing sounds

It is super important that we are forming our letters correctly. In class this half term, we will be focusing on the first letter family, known as the 'curly' family. This letter family concludes the letters c, o, a, d, g, q, e, s, f. We emphasise the important of starting each letter with the 'c' motion, to ensure each letter is formed correctly. In addition, we also use the RWI handwriting rhymes to remember how form each letter. Below you will find the writing videos for 8 letters in the curly letter family. Can you chose a video to watch at home and have a go at forming the letter correctly? You could write the letters using different materials such as chalk, pencils, in flour or shaving foam. Each video will show you how to write the sound correctly, then will recap some review sounds at the end.

3. Fred Games

Below is a document which explains how to play some FRED games with your child.

4. Reading and writing words

After you have played some Fred Games with your child, please listen to them read their sound blending book, or phonics book, and write any comments in their reading record. After they have finished reading, it would be great if you could support your child to have a go at spelling some of the words in their sound blending book, or simple three letter words. Say the word aloud and use Fred Fingers to pinch the sounds to help you write them. Remember to add it to Tapestry! Here is a video to show you how to use Fred Fingers to help you spell.

Day 1 - Character - Can you draw a picture of the boy? Don't forget your magic word and number! Can you use Fred Fingers to write a word? e.g. red, big, sad.

Day 2 - Setting - Can you draw the shore and the jetty? Don't forget your magic word and number! Can you use Fred Fingers to write a word? e.g. sand, long, fish, hot.

Day 3 - Adventure - The rocket ran out of petrol. Can you draw a new mode of transport that could fly the boy to the stars? Don't forget to write a word to describe it.

Use the RWI letter formation rhymes below to support you to form your letter correctly.

Topic

Understanding the world

As scientists, we will be learning about nocturnal animals. We will be looking at the features of different animals and discuss why they are best suited to day or night. Can you have a look through your books at home to see if you can find any animals in them? Are they nocturnal? What features do they have? Are they best suited to day or night? Why?

Alternatively, with your grown ups support, use the internet to find out about a nocturnal animal of your choice. Don't forget to add your learning to Tapestry.

Expressive Arts and Design

As artists, we will be unpicking the work of Vincent Van Gogh by looking into his painting 'The Starry Night'. We will be mixing paints to create our own version of The Starry Night. Can you create your version at home? Remember to post your art work to Tapestry.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

As explorers, we will be talking about people in our community and looking at our immediate environment.

  1. Can you go on a learning walk with your grown ups. What shops or buildings are in your local environment? Can you draw a map of what you pass on your way to school?
  2. People who help us - Can you name some of the people who help us and discuss how/why? What does a firefighter to do help us? How do farmers help us or postmen/women? Can you add a video to Tapestry of you talking about someone who helps us?
